The National Chairman, Council of Ulama of Jama’atu Izalatil Bid’ah Wa Ikamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS), Dr. Jalo Jalingo, has advised Muslim senior military officers, both serving and retired, to ensure that their funeral rites are conducted strictly according to Islamic teachings.
Dr. Jalo gave the advice in a statement issued on Tuesday, stressing the need for Muslim officers — including former Heads of State, former Governors, and senior military generals — to make it part of their wills that their burial arrangements be carried out purely in line with Islamic principles.
He cautioned against the practice of combining Islamic funerals with military protocol, such as parades, music, or the display of medals and flowers, describing such acts as contrary to Islamic burial rites.
“We urge our Muslim brothers in the military to clearly state in their wills that their funerals should follow Islamic guidelines alone, without any military ceremonial process,” Dr. Jalo said. “A Muslim’s burial should be a moment of humility, reflection, and submission to Allah — not an occasion for worldly display.”
The JIBWIS Ulama Council Chairman further reminded that death marks the beginning of accountability before Allah, and thus every Muslim should strive to end their journey in a manner consistent with the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
He emphasized that Islam does not permit blending religious rites with military or secular traditions, urging the Nigerian military authorities to respect the wishes of Muslim officers in this regard.
